My Career Goals In Accomplishing Psychology Major

Psychology is my chosen major due to my interest in studying the human mind and behaviour. Counseling psychology is one of the areas that I found most interesting. Counseling psychology focuses on the psychological health of individuals. This field is concerned with normal development and mental disorders. My knowledge will help me to better individuals psychologically. To be more specific, I want to focus on understanding and helping children/adolescents/young adults’ mental health as I acknowledge the importance of this generation to the world in general. I am a Junior student at CWU’s Department of Psychology. I’m overwhelmed with all the information I have received about the Psychology major and how it will help me achieve my career goals. However, I’m excited to learn all I can for my academic path as a counseling psychologist. I will also gain experience in the counseling field through internships and volunteering. I want to work as a child-family support service or mental health counselor within the next ten years.

When I think back to my two final years of college and the knowledge that I have gained through classes, “psychology” is a term that I recognize and understand, as well as its effects on individuals and communities (social Psychology). In my clinical psychology course, I learned more about mental illnesses and abnormality. I loved watching videos or movies and then analyzing the personalities of characters or people based on their behavior. This is something that I think we all do, including those who are not interested in psychology, every day. We connect and observe people to run society. You can make psychology practical with a minimum of knowledge. Though I have no direct experience with counseling psychology, every time I am involved in school activities or community events I always keep the point of view of a Psychology student. I have volunteered in the field of clinical psychology. I used do weekly volunteer work at Full Life Care Adult Daycare, where they offer special food and services for seniors and adults with mental impairments. This organization has a friendly environment which makes clients feel at home. Staff and volunteers try to interact with clients who have severe mental disorders and help them understand the values they hold. Northwest Harvest is another organization that I volunteer with. It’s located on Cherry Street in downtown Seattle. This well-known charity provides healthy food for people in need throughout the state while respecting their dignity. Many of those who need help are low-income, homeless or in poverty. Through my volunteering, I had the chance to be around people who were suffering from mental and/or physical illnesses. These valuable services reminds of me each day how important psychology is in our society.

I expect to be involved in social or volunteer activities more closely related to counseling. The college website has provided me with many useful links that will help me contribute to the counseling community. There are many other projects and research that I can do through my classes.

The college’s Career Service informed me that I had a wide variety of career assessment inventories. I am interested in mental health, social services, family therapy and school/career guidance. As mentioned at the beginning, I am looking forward to helping children/adolescents/young adults’ reinforce and improve their psychological health. I realize that some of the most important strategies for this profession are good communication skills, experience with counseling psychology, multicultural competency, and problem-solving skills.

I completed a few questionnaires on the Type Focus website, which was recommended by my college’s instructor. I was surprised to learn that such websites exist. The website helped me gain a better understanding of my personality and my interests in my future career. The results were based mainly on personalities, interests and values. It was surprising to find out that I fell into the ESFJs category (Extraversion, Sense, & Feeling, and Judging), which are helpful, organized, caring people who use their traditional values and genuine concern to help others. I feel lucky that I am one of the students who doesn’t struggle with what to do next. I was satisfied with the results because I am confident that I will be a good fit for a psychology counseling major. You should do what you love.

Are we really all alone? Can life’s difficulties be solved in a straightforward way? What makes people happy? This is just one of many questions that has helped to stimulate my interest for Psychology.

I am interested in becoming a psychotherapist because mental health problems are often ignored or disregarded. I developed an interest in the human brain when my younger sister’s state of mind declined. The specialist at that time was confused about how to diagnose it, and she ended up being hospitalized. My fascination with the human brain grew after I witnessed first-hand how complex and abstract it is.

I was very satisfied and motivated by my participation in the school’s mental-health fundraising campaigns. It has led me to become interested in a psychology career. This campaign gave me the chance to improve my communication and work-under-pressure skills. It also helped me develop my leadership skills. When I was at Guys and St Thomas for my work experience, it re-encouraged me to be interested in mental health.

Women of the World, a conference held in South Bank in London, has confirmed my career choice. A discussion about women’s mental wellbeing sparked hope for a positive social impact to be made in the modern world.

The psychology modules that are part of my Access to Health and Human Sciences program have me excited. This course has helped me think differently about psychology as I now have the necessary theoretical knowledge to pursue a psychology career. My daily life is a constant source of analysis and I use the theories I’ve learned to try and explain my observations. My opinions are now well-structured and I’m confident that they will be a positive contribution to my academic growth. My private study is used to review the lessons I learned in class and to consolidate them. I am a good team player and appreciate other’s ideas and opinions, but I also love working independently. My ability to communicate verbally has made me a great team member. Motivation is key to success. I’m a highly-motivated individual who loves learning new things. My personality is positive, hardworking and determined. University life will bring me so many benefits.

I am confident that my passion for the subject will help me excel in academics. I’m determined to pursue my passion for psychology as a career and would love to be able to study it at a degree level. I am always open to new friendships and challenges. You will probably find that I am a hard-working and honest person. Continued education will help me develop my social and interpersonal skills. These qualities are what make me a good candidate for the course. I’m confident that I’ll be able both to benefit and to contribute. I look forward to starting my university studies.
